The formula, and a worked example

Equal spacing is a division problem with one trap in it: the battens take up wall width themselves, so you cannot simply divide the wall by the number of battens. You have to remove the wood first, then divide what is left between the gaps.

Writing the wall width as W, the batten width as B and the batten count as N:

G is the clear gap — the visible opening between two boards. C is the center-to-center spacing, which is the gap plus one batten width. They are different numbers and mixing them up is the single most common way a board-and-batten wall ends up crooked.

Worked example

A 120 in wall, 2 1/2 in battens, a batten at each outside edge, and nine battens:

The last line is the check worth doing on any layout: the right edge of the last batten must land exactly on the far edge of the wall. If it does not, the arithmetic was wrong somewhere.

Why the fractions on screen are not the whole story

The calculator does every step at full precision and rounds only at the moment a number is displayed. Those two things are not always the same. Take a 100 in wall with 2 1/2 in battens and eight battens at the edges:

Under a hundredth of an inch — thinner than a pencil line, and invisible on a wall. But it is real, which is why the exact decimal is shown next to the fraction wherever the two differ. Mark from the fractions; know that the calculation underneath was never rounded.

How to measure the wall

  1. Measure the width at three heights — near the floor, at eye level and near the ceiling. Walls are rarely square. Use the smallest of the three so nothing binds when you fit the last board.
  2. Measure the boards you actually have. Nominal sizes lie: a 1×3 is normally 2 1/2 in wide and a 1×4 is normally 3 1/2 in.
  3. Decide what you are not covering. Door casings, a cabinet run or a fireplace surround at either end go in the “exclude at the left / right” fields, and the layout is calculated on what is left.
  4. Pick one reference edge and never change it. Every position in the table below is measured from the left edge of the wall, on purpose.

Mark from one edge, not from the last batten

It is tempting to set a spacer block against the batten you just fixed and mark the next one from it. Don't. Every mark carries a small error — a pencil line's width, a board that is a hair wide — and measuring from the previous batten adds those errors together all the way across the wall. Twelve battens at a 1/32 in error each is over a third of an inch by the far corner, and it all shows up in the last gap.

Measuring every position from the same reference edge keeps each error independent. A single mark being slightly off stays slightly off, instead of pushing everything after it.

Frequently asked questions

How far apart should board and batten battens be?

There is no single correct spacing. Most interior accent walls land somewhere between 10 and 18 inches of clear gap, but the right number depends on the width of your wall, the width of your battens, the ceiling height and the look you want — wider gaps read calmer and more traditional, narrower gaps read busier and more modern.

The practical approach is to pick a gap you like the look of, enter it above as a target, and let the calculator find the nearest spacing that divides your wall exactly. Equal spacing matters far more to the eye than any particular number.

How do I calculate equal board and batten spacing?

Subtract the total width taken up by the battens from the wall width, then divide what is left by the number of gaps. With a batten at each outside edge, N battens create N−1 gaps, so the gap is (wall width − N × batten width) ÷ (N − 1). With a gap at each outside edge instead, N battens create N+1 gaps, so you divide by N+1.

The part people miss is that the battens themselves occupy wall space. Dividing the wall width by the number of battens ignores that and produces spacing that drifts further off with every batten.

How many battens do I need?

That depends on which quantity you want to control. If you have a gap size in mind, switch the calculator to “a gap size I have in mind” and it will tell you the batten count that gets closest to it while still dividing the wall exactly.

If you already know how many battens you want — because of a look you have seen, or the boards you have already bought — switch to “a number of battens” and the calculator gives you the exact gap that count produces.

Does batten width affect the spacing?

Yes, substantially. The battens take up real wall width, and that width comes out of the space available for gaps. Ten 2 1/2 inch battens occupy 25 inches of a 120 inch wall, leaving 95 inches to divide between the gaps rather than the full 120.

Measure the actual board rather than trusting its nominal name. A “1×3” is normally 2 1/2 inches wide, a “1×4” is normally 3 1/2 inches, and MDF strips are often cut to whatever the supplier felt like.

Should a batten be placed at each end of the wall?

Both treatments are used. A batten at each outside edge gives a framed, finished look and hides the corner joint, which is why it is the more common choice for a wall that runs corner to corner. Leaving a gap at each edge suits a panel that floats within a larger wall, or a wall where a batten in the corner would collide with trim or a door casing.

The choice changes the arithmetic, not just the appearance, so the calculator asks about it up front. Switching between the two with everything else held constant will change your gap.

What is center-to-center spacing?

Center-to-center spacing is the distance from the middle of one batten to the middle of the next. It equals the clear gap plus one batten width.

It is the more useful number when you are marking the wall, because you can mark a single point for each batten and align the middle of the board to it. The clear gap is the more useful number when you are checking your work by eye or cutting spacer blocks.

Can I calculate in inches or centimetres?

Both. Use the unit switch at the top of the form. In inches you can type decimals or fractions — 120, 120.5 and 120 1/2 are all read the same way — and results are shown as practical fractions rounded to 1/16, 1/8 or 1/4 as you prefer. In centimetres, results are shown as decimals.

Switching units converts what you have already entered rather than reinterpreting the numbers, so the wall stays the same wall.

How should I handle multiple walls?

Calculate each wall separately. Walls of different widths cannot share both an equal gap and a batten at every corner — something has to give.

Decide which one matters more to you before you start. If a consistent gap across the room matters most, run each wall in “a gap size I have in mind” mode with the same target and accept that the counts will differ. If matching batten counts matter more, use “a number of battens” mode and accept that the gaps will differ slightly from wall to wall. Differences under about half an inch are rarely noticeable across a corner.

Is this calculator for exterior siding?

No. This calculator is for interior decorative board-and-batten walls and wainscoting only. It computes an even visual layout and nothing else.

Exterior board-and-batten siding, roofing battens and any structural application involve fastener schedules, substrate and sheathing requirements, wind and moisture considerations and building-code rules that this tool does not address at all. Use the manufacturer's installation instructions and your local code for those.

Why does my exact spacing differ from the spacing I asked for?

Because a whole number of equally spaced battens rarely divides a wall into exactly the gap you had in mind. If you ask for a 12 inch gap on a 120 inch wall with 2 1/2 inch battens, nine battens produce 12 3/16 inches and ten produce about 10 9/16 inches. Neither is 12, and nine is much closer.

The calculator evaluates the plausible whole-batten counts, works out the exact gap each one produces, and shows you the closest. It then tells you what the difference is, rather than quietly rounding your target and pretending it worked out.

Limitations

This is a layout tool for interior decorative board and batten and wainscoting. It works out where to put the boards so the wall looks evenly spaced. That is all it does.

It does not determine, and must not be used for:
